Meet Loraine, Our Newest Caretaker!

Meet Loraine!

Loraine is our newest Moraine caretaker, just like you. And we created her to share with you the journey of one water drop through our Moraine.

And, yes, it’s meant to be a good dose of silly fun!

But it’s also vitally important. This is your Moraine, our Moraine. And as supporters of the Land Trust we feel a sense of place, connection and deep, deep care for the land.

I love talking to supporters like you and hearing your stories. I know that we all take individual action every single day to protect and cherish our Moraine. Thank you, so much, for all you do.

Today, as you read Loraine’s story, I hope you’ll consider making a special summer donation to the Land Trust.

How much should you give? Great question! Well, as you may know, our Greenbelt offers $2.6 billion in ecological value to our province each year. This calculation from the David Suzuki and Greenbelt Foundation report is based on quantifying the natural services—water filtration, flood control, climate stabilization, waste treatment, wildlife habitat and recreation. That works out to $3,487 per hectare per year, or $1,445 per acre.

So, I’d love to ask you for $2.6 billion, but that’s a bit unreasonable, isn’t it? A gift of $3,487/$1,445 would also be fantastic! Your gift of any amount you choose would be greatly appreciated.

Your gift will go to work right away protecting our Moraine and Greenbelt. This summer, we have been ‘BioBlitzing’ a number of our properties to get a complete inventory of endangered, rare, and plain old fascinating species. Your gift supports these efforts!

Your gift also helps with our outreach events and educational workshops in the community, inspiring our neighbours to love and cherish the Moraine like we do.

And most important of all, your gift helps us preserve more properties on the Moraine and Greenbelt. Right now, we are working on preserving 5 properties with truly spectacular—and critically important—water features! Protecting these properties means protecting streams and wetlands and also crucial habitat for turtles, salamanders, frogs and more.

In fact, 3 of the 5 properties are considered “High Aquifer Vulnerability” which means that surface water penetrates to the aquifer quickly—and therefore so do contaminants—so protection of these waters is urgent! Our fourth property has 2 headwater streams that flow into the Holland River and a Provincially Significant Wetland. And our fifth is directly adjacent to a new subdivision area and is part of the Humber River Watershed.

Please, take a moment and make your special summer gift to our Land Trust. You can use the reply form and envelope provided, or you can make your safe and secure online gift right now at

I hope you enjoy sitting down with Loraine and enjoying a day in the life of a water drop on our Moraine. I hope it makes you smile. And I hope it makes you feel good to know your gift will be put to work to preserve the Moraine right away!

                                                                        Yours for our Moraine,

This is your Moraine: Our Moraine

YOU can help the Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust save and protect more properties forever.

Sometimes you might hear talk about whether charities get tangible results. Here at the Land Trust, together, we get results you can walk on—and frogs can hop on, birds can fly over, orchids can grow in and snakes can slither through and the list goes on and on...

But with your support, we can do so much more with your gift. If you've donated in the past, you have helped support our impassioned presentation to the commission reviewing southern Ontario’s green gems: the Niagara Escarpment, the Greenbelt and the Oak Ridges Moraine. We are confident the commission will argue for more protection of precious green space.

You helped us host sessions and seminars like “How Nature Affects Your Health”, where we learned that 20 minutes of walking in the forest can boost your immune system by 54%! And another favourite was “What’s Buzzing in Your Neighbourhood?” where landowners learned about bee populations and about how they could help these crucial pollinators.

You support our inventory and atlas work, where we discovered—to our delight—that 35 of the properties we protect provide a home for at least 19 different Species at Risk.

Thank you!

But the past is prologue. Our plans for 2016 are even more ambitious, and that’s why I am asking for your support today.

Here’s just some of what we want to achieve—together—in 2016. Your support today is critical!

With your generous support, we’ve had a great 2015 and we’re raring to go in 2016. Your support today will get us off to a strong start. Simply click here to access Canada Helps which you can use to send us your gift today.

As always, I would be happy to answer any questions you have about our work. You can reach me by mail, by email at or by picking up the phone and calling me at (905) 853-3171 X 32.

We simply couldn’t do what we do without your support. My board joins me in expressing our profound thanks for your investing in land protection through the

Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust.

For our cherished Moraine,

Susan Walmer, CPA,CMA

Executive Director

P.S. Your vital and vibrant support will help us save more land and the species that live here. Will you please give today? Thank you!

Look up from what you are doing and out the window. Do you see a diversity of animals, birds, plants and butterflies thriving in their homes, feeding and breeding areas? Do you see clean, fresh water flowing freely on the Oak Ridges Moraine?

Cast your gaze to the same scene in five, ten or fifteen years. Do you see the march of large homes where trees once grew? Expanses of paved parking lots and driveways interfering with the natural flow of water? Ornamental species competing with natural ones? Are there culverts and catchment ponds doing what open lands of the Moraine used to do?

The Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust is citizens like you who have looked ahead – with an eye to the future to ensure the lands you see remain functional for many species. There is something that can be done to ensure a healthier, sustainable Oak Ridges Moraine - and you can help.
